Bitstream analyzer alternatives, compared

If you arrived here searching for an Elecard StreamEye alternative or an mp4info alternative, this page compares the tools that are actually in use in 2026 — what each one is good at, what it costs, and when this one is the wrong choice. No vendor logos, no affiliate links, and no "we do everything" table.

1. Three questions decide it

Q1 — Do you need to know why a particular block looks bad? Then you need block-level data: QP and motion vectors. Elecard StreamEye, CodecVisa, YUView and MP4 Analyzer all give you that. ffprobe does not — it stops at frame type and frame size.

Q2 — Do you need buffer (HRD/DPB) analysis, quality metrics against a reference YUV, or standard compliance verification? That is Elecard StreamEye Studio territory (Zond 265 if you are HEVC-only). Nothing in a browser does this, and neither does this tool.

Q3 — Do you only need to know whether the container is sane, from a script? Then mp4info / mp4dump (Bento4) or MP4Box -info (GPAC) are the right answer, and they are free. MP4 Analyzer shows the same box tree if you would rather click than type.

And one that overrides all of the above: if you cannot install software — a locked-down work laptop, a client's machine, a Chromebook, a tablet — only MP4 Analyzer fits, because it is the only tool here that runs inside a browser tab. That is the entire reason it exists.

2. Feature comparison

Tool Runs as Platforms H.264 block-level QP / MV MP4 box structure Price
MP4 Analyzer (this tool) Web app, fully client-side Any modern browser Yes — QP heatmap + MV arrows Yes (interactive tree + hex) Free, no account
Elecard StreamEye Studio Desktop suite (4 apps + CLI) Windows 10/11, macOS 11–26, Ubuntu LTS Yes — plus DPB, HDR and compliance checks Syntax-level (Stream Analyzer) Commercial; demo on request
CodecVisa Desktop app (Qt) Windows / macOS / Linux Yes Not its focus Commercial; trial available
YUView Desktop app (Qt) Windows / macOS / Linux Yes (HEVC/AVC elementary streams, via libde265 / HM) No (container parsing is delegated to FFmpeg) Free, open source (GPLv3)
ffmpeg-debug-qp Command line + parser Windows / macOS / Linux Yes — per-macroblock QP values, no MV No Free, open source (MIT)
Bento4 mp4info / mp4dump Command line Windows / macOS / Linux No Yes — the reference implementation for box structure Free (GPLv2; commercial license available)
GPAC MP4Box Command line (GUI available) Windows / macOS / Linux No Yes (MP4Box -info) Free, open source
FFmpeg ffprobe Command line Windows / macOS / Linux No — frame types and sizes only Partial (-show_format) Free, open source

Facts in this table reflect each vendor's public product pages as of 2026. This page is not affiliated with any of the vendors listed and uses no vendor logos; product names are referenced descriptively only and remain the property of their owners.

3. What this tool is actually good at

  • Nothing to install, nothing to upload. The file is parsed inside your own tab, and the site has no upload endpoint at all. The fastest way to verify that: disconnect from the network and open the file — it keeps working.
  • Two views of the same file in one window: the ISOBMFF box tree (with hex) and the coded frame data (QP heatmap, MV arrows). Most tools do one side or the other.
  • Zero configuration. No decoder library paths to point at, no settings screen.
  • Cross-platform is a side effect: macOS, Windows, Linux, ChromeOS and tablets, because it is only a web page.
  • Free, no account, no watermark, no feature gates.

4. What this tool does not do

This list is deliberately blunt — if your requirement lands on any of these lines, use another tool and save yourself the time:

  • H.264 and H.265 only. No AV1, VP9, VVC or AVS3. For multi-codec coverage see CodecVisa or StreamEye Studio.
  • No reference comparison. No PSNR / SSIM / VMAF against a decoded YUV — there is no ground-truth mode at all.
  • No HRD/CPB buffer model and no DPB visualization, so you cannot spot buffer underflow.
  • No conformance checking or error diagnosis. A corrupt stream is not localized, and MPEG-2 TS timing (PCR/PTS/DTS) is out of scope.
  • No full syntax tree. You get the box tree plus per-frame hex — not an expandable exp-Golomb syntax browser like Stream Analyzer.
  • No batch or command-line automation, and no data export yet (QP / MV as CSV / JSON is not implemented).
  • Memory-bound. 4K or 1.5 GB files are slow to parse the first time and may not fit on a phone at all; the real limit is the browser tab's memory, not the format.
  • Frame preview needs the browser's built-in hardware decoder (recent Chrome / Edge). Without it you still get bitstream and block data, just no picture.
  • Slower than native tools — the browser version cannot use the same native shortcuts. That is the trade.

6. Detailed comparisons

  • vs Elecard StreamEye Studio — where the commercial suite's boundary is, and when a browser is genuinely enough.
  • vs Bento4 mp4info — command-line box structure versus an interactive tree, and when each one wins.
  • vs YUView — the only free desktop competitor, and a capable one; the difference is install or not install.
  • vs ffmpeg-debug-qp — the ready-made answer for per-macroblock QP; it wins on scripting and numeric export, and stalls on getting it to run.
  • vs CodecVisa — a commercial multi-codec analyzer with per-stage pixel views; this tool has nothing on that path.
  • vs GPAC MP4Box — the free command-line authority on box structure, and it can change the file too; this tool only reads.
  • vs ffprobe — free, usually already installed, one command for an answer; it stops at the frame layer, this tool continues at the block layer.
