YUView alternative

In the "free" quadrant, YUView is the strongest competitor and it is genuinely good: open source, cross-platform, still maintained, and solid at block-level visualization. So this page is not about talking it down. It is about one practical question — it has to be installed, and sometimes you cannot install anything.

1. What YUView is

YUView is the Qt-based, cross-platform YUV player and analysis toolset from the IENT institute at RWTH Aachen. It is GPLv3, has roughly 2.2k stars on GitHub, and was still being maintained as of 2026. It bills itself as a YUV player, but it does considerably more:

  • A wide range of YUV formats, subsamplings and bit depths, plus raw RGB, images and image sequences;
  • Direct decoding of H.265/HEVC elementary streams via libde265 / HM with visualization of prediction modes, CU partitions, motion vectors and reference indices;
  • Bitrate curves over the sequence (in the spirit of Bitrate Viewer);
  • PSNR and difference comparison between two videos;
  • H.266 stream NALU syntax and values (via VVDec / VTM, though VVC CU-level analysis is not supported yet);
  • Image formats such as jpg, png, webp and HEIF.

2. Where it beats this tool

CapabilityDetail
Raw elementary streams (Annex B)Feed it a .h264 / .h265 bitstream directly, no container needed
HEVC CU partitions and prediction modesEncoder-development level detail
Bitrate curvesSee rate swings across the whole sequence at a glance
PSNR / difference comparisonObjective comparison of two videos — this tool has nothing like it
YUV and image sequencesUncompressed footage and stills; this tool is MP4-family containers only
Swappable decodersCompare libde265, HM and FFmpeg output against each other

If your work is encoder development or codec research, and you are allowed to install software — just use YUView.

3. Where this tool differs

  • No install. Open a URL and you are running. That is the only difference, and it is decisive: a locked-down work laptop, a client site, a Chromebook, a tablet — YUView cannot go there.
  • Open the MP4 directly. No ffmpeg -i or Bento4 step to extract an elementary stream, no decoder library path to configure. Drop in a .mp4 and you are looking at results. YUView decodes container files through FFmpeg, and its internal-structure views centre on elementary streams.
  • The QP heatmap is the primary view. This tool maps each block's deviation from the frame's base QP to a color, which is a faster way to spot the anomalous region than reading a partition map.
  • Container and bitstream in one interface. Box tree, field tree, per-frame hex and block analysis are all part of the same screen — no exporting files back and forth between two tools.

5. Which to pick

Your situationPick
Encoder development or research, and you can install softwareYUView
You need elementary stream analysis and bitrate curvesYUView
You need PSNR between two videosYUView (or ffmpeg)
You have an MP4 and want to find which blocks have high QPThis tool
You cannot install software, or you are on someone else's machineThis tool (the only option)
You want container structure and block data at the same timeThis tool

In one line: if you can install software and need encoder-grade detail, use YUView; if you cannot install anything, or you just need to find where a file goes wrong, use this tool. For the wider picture, see the full comparison.
